I've always loved doodling & collecting quotes. I want to create a place to put them all so my Illustration Journal was born! I headed to the bookstore across from my apartment building to pick up a little plain moleskin this afternoon. I got a pack of three plain with kraft paper covers. I've been making notebook covers like crazy to practice sewing so I decided to make a cover for this one too.
The big paisley one is my Elements of Theater sketchbook, the little one with the green appliqués is my note taking notebook for that class, and the one with the orange appliqués is the illustration journal.
Inspired by retro mod patterns, I tried my hand at appliqués & surprisingly my first attempt turned out better than my second. The first attempt was the illustration journal. I think it came out pretty perfect. I dunno what I did on the yellow & green notebook but I couldn't line up the beginning & ending of the stitches!
I took the cover of the illustration journal back & forth from the sewing machine to the sketchbook in order to get it right. At first I was satisfied with out the button, then I felt I needed it. I had a pack of hair ties (me? I know, my hair hasn't needed a hair tie in years!) which I used to make the elastic part that goes over the button. Then a piece of felt was sewn over the back of the elastic where I attached the elastic. I covered the button with fabric & sewed it on. I am so proud of it!
Here are some of my initial drawings:
This first one is a quote I think I heard "The only way to drink the ocean is to sip it drop by drop". I don't think I made this up, but I've always liked the saying. It's true, the only way to get something done is to tackle it step by step.
